What was it like to walk along the boardwalk at Fort Steele back in the day? To heard the jingle of horse harness as a North West Mounted Police patrol passed by towards the barracks. Smell the scent of fresh baked bread wafting from Mrs. Underhills City Bakery. Then through the dust across the road see the fearsome shape of the dark skinned native appear?
Taking a walk through the reconstructed and recreated historical town of Fort Steele, I couldn’t help but wonder at all that has disappeared. And feel sad. I have always been facinated with B.C. and Canada’s history, and the fort and the man named after it, Sam Steele of the NWMP, certainly played their parts in shaping the province and country I now call home today. It was a pleasure to walk and imagine, and for a moment wish I was back living in those amazing times.
