I’m a journalist based in the Greater Vancouver area primarily covering community news as a photographer and reporter. Originally, my first interest in storytelling was through writing, and that’s why I entered into journalism. I wanted to tell other peoples’ stories and hone my craft through surviving weekly deadlines and overcoming diverse situations.
In college I figured I’d coast through the requisite photography courses while concentrating on the writing craft. But everything changed when I picked up my first Pentax K1000. I fell in love with the power of visual storytelling, the art of mixing photos (yes, plural) with words. And for the next two years I learned as much as I could from my instructors.
Since 2003 I’ve been in the field, working mostly as a visual storyteller or photographer/reporter or vice versa in official terminology. I’ve had the opportunity to meet thousands of people, experience amazing moments, tell some great stories and capture several powerful photos.
Along the way I’ve had the opportunity to develop and feed another interest of mine, and that’s exploring the wild places in B.C. I’ve only seen a fraction of British Columbia, and then there’s the other provinces and territories too.
There’s a lot to see, and a lot of stories to tell. That’s why I’ve started dhpi (visual stories), to tell some of mine. So this is me, exploring the world through photography and words.
